"Salinas", "Marinas de Sal" or "Marinas" are the places, with special conditions, where salt is made through the evaporation system of sea water. This popular activity is considered the oldest and most characteristic of Aveiro, occupying the "Marnotos na Safra" during almost the whole year. The salines are also the refuge of numerous birds, in particular the limícolas.
