Built in 1914, the spherical steel drum tower was designed to hold 50,000 gallons of water in the of 8m wide water tank . The distinct red structure stands at just over 27.5m tall. The spherical design of the water tank is based on a German design and was partially imported from Europe. The distinctive onion shape of the tower dominates the hill on which it sits, North-East of the Johannesburg city. The unusual design of the Yeoville Water Tower and its elevated, prominent position make it a landmark structure in the Johannesburg suburban skyline.
