Today you will cover a lot of ground as you hike across a plateau of grassy moorland and heather dotted with volcanic rock formations. We will trek through Shira 1 Camp where there are often views of Kibo Peak floating in the clouds as we approach our destination, Shira 2. We gain reasonable altitude as we move towards Shira 1 and parts of the route. they are quite steep. As you progress towards Shira 2 you will have the opportunity to see the Northern Ice Fields from the west side of the mountain with some unusual views of Kibo. Our steady climb through the Shira Plateau wasteland will help with acclimatization and we will enjoy great panoramic views.
Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower Elevation: 12,500 ft to 15,190 ft Distance: 7 km/4 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert Lava Tower to Barranco Camp Elevation: 15,190 ft to 13,044 ft Distance: 3 km/2 miles Hiking Time: 2-3 hours Habitat: Alpine Desert From the Shira Plateau, we continue to the east up a ridge, passing the junction towards the peak of Kibo. As we continue, our direction changes to the South East towards the Lava Tower, called the "Shark's Tooth." Shortly after the tower, we come to the second junction which brings us up to the Arrow Glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. We now continue down to the Barranco Camp at an altitude of 13,000ft. Here we rest, enjoy dinner, and overnight. Although you end the day at the same elevation as when you started, this day is very important for acclimatization and will help your body prepare for summit day.
After a good night's sleep and breakfast, we walked to the Barafu camp at an altitude of 4640m. The climb will take us through desolate slopes with no surrounding vegetation. It's a steep hike that makes elevation more difficult. Returning to the camp, we ate and rested until the afternoon to prepare for a long night ahead. It is important to stay hydrated and warm. We have an early dinner and then take advantage of sleep because we will get up from 11am to 12pm to start the journey to the top.
We started around midnight and hiked up the glaciers at the top. We will climb the slopes in 4-5 hours but will reach amazing heights in a short distance. The views are spectacular. We should be on the rim of the crater at Stella Point (5739m) when the first rays of sunlight hit us. Dramatic cliffs in the crater surrounded us and the views of the jagged Mawenzi Peak and beyond were breathtaking. Another hour of walking will bring us to the summit, Uhuru Peak (5895m). We started our descent by heading back to Stella Point, then headed downhill and back to Camp Barafu for breakfast, before finally heading down to Millennium Camp for a well-deserved long break.
A gentle hike takes us through the rainforest to the Mweka Gate, where we complete park formalities and receive a certificate, which you can proudly hang up! We're then picked up by our car and back to your hotel in Moshi, where you can treat yourself to a warm shower.
