Pillitteri Estates Winery has won over 1,000 wine awards from local and international competitions. The Pillitteri family opened the winery in 1993 on the same Niagara Stone Road land they've farmed since the 1960s. It's known as the world's largest estate producer of Icewine, and also makes a full range of VQA reds, whites and sparkling wines. Taste your way through the lineup and hear how a family fruit stand grew into one of Niagara's best-known wineries.
Bella Terra Vineyards sits on a family-run grape farm in the Four Mile Creek sub-appellation, tended by the Puglisi family since 1974. The name means "beautiful land" in Italian and honours the family's Italian roots and three generations of grape growing. Owner Lou Puglisi was named Niagara's Grape King in 2008, and the winery (formerly PondView Estate Winery) has grown into a busy, welcoming stop for tastings among the vines.
Konzelmann Estate Winery is Niagara's only lakefront winery, set right on the shore of Lake Ontario. Herbert Konzelmann planted the vineyard in 1984, carrying on a winemaking tradition that goes back to Germany in the 1890s. The lakeside climate suits crisp Riesling, Gewürztraminer and Chardonnay, along with Icewine and late-harvest wines. Taste in the boutique and tasting bar, and enjoy the lake view while you're there.
Palatine Hills Estate Winery is a family-owned estate on the Niagara Lakeshore, founded by John and Barbara Neufeld, one of the first families in the area to plant vinifera grapes. Their sons now run the winery and make the wines, all from estate-grown fruit. Its very first Icewine won Wine of the Year at the Ontario Wine Awards, and it was named Canadian Icewine Producer of the Year in 2006. Expect a relaxed, laid-back tasting among the vines.
