Explore the base of the Água de Pau volcano, located in the central part of São Miguel Island. This tour will offer you a hike full of surprises, showcasing unique natural elements, from the characteristic fauna and flora of the region to the iconic happy cows of our archipelago.

At the end of the trail, get ready to discover one of São Miguel’s thermal paradises: Caldeira Velha. Here, you can enjoy a relaxing soak in the thermal pools or, if you prefer, in the iconic waterfall.

What to expect

Janela do Inferno is a scenic trail in the southern part of São Miguel Island, starting near Casa da Água. The hike takes you through lush forests, pastures, and four historic tunnels once used for aqueducts. Along the way, enjoy stunning views of the municipalities of Lagoa and Ponta Delgada and vibrant landscapes with valleys and streams. The trail culminates in a beautiful waterfall formed by water erosion.

Important Tips:

Wear suitable footwear due to muddy and uneven terrain.
Bring a flashlight for the dark tunnels.
Not ideal for those with claustrophobia.
After the hike, relax at Caldeira Velha, where you can enjoy thermal pools or a natural massage under a waterfall. Don’t forget to take memorable photos!
