Valparaíso’s historic quarter, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, spreads across steep hills overlooking the Pacific. Its colorful houses, varied architecture and street art make it one of Chile’s most distinctive cities. Many murals reflect social and political issues and the creativity of local artists, and walking its streets is the best way to discover its hidden corners.
Paseo Gálvez, in the heart of Cerro Concepción, is one of Valparaíso’s most colorful streets. Its walls are covered with murals by local artists, from historical scenes to whimsical fantasies, and many carry social and political messages. Look for the famous Red Door, one of the street’s best-known landmarks.
From this viewpoint, Valparaíso reveals its essence: rugged hills, colorful houses and a wide bay. Small houses cascade down the slopes, and nearby stands Palacio Baburizza, one of the city’s most striking mansions, now home to the Fine Arts Museum (museum entry not included). Just steps away is Espacio Rojo, one of the leading art galleries in the Valparaíso Region. A private visit with its curator is part of our Premium Valparaíso tour.
Journey Through Time and Justice Ascensor El Peral, a historic funicular dating back to 1904, links Cerro Alegre with the city center. As you ride down, enjoy views over the old town. At the bottom, in Plaza de la Justicia, stands the statue of Themis, with her scales and sword. Unlike most statues of Justice, her eyes are not blindfolded: she represents Themis, the Greek goddess, not the Roman Iustitia. According to local tradition, her scales at rest mean that judgment has already been made: once justice is served, there is no turning back.
The heart of Valparaíso’s waterfront, Plaza Sotomayor tells the story of the city’s maritime history. It is dominated by the Monument to the Heroes of Iquique, which honors the sailors of the Battle of Iquique (1879), during the War of the Pacific against Peru and Bolivia (1879–1884). Overlooking the square is the Chilean Navy headquarters. Just steps away stands the former Post Office building (1942), now home to Chile’s Ministry of Cultures, Arts and Heritage. Inspired by the Bauhaus movement, its curved lines and round windows evoke an ocean liner, a nod to the city’s maritime tradition.
