Villa Erba and its grounds sit on the site of a former nunnery which was founded at the end of the XI century. The general Domenico Pino, owner of Villa d'Este bought part of it in 1816 and transformed the nunnery into a manor house. One of the most important cultural and tourist spot in Lombardy. A XVII century villa built for the milanese marquis Giorgio Clerici. It reached its splendour in 1801 when it passed to the banker and art collector Sommariva.
