The historic windmills of Schermerhorn: No visit to the Netherlands is complete without experiencing the iconic windmills that helped shape this country—literally turning water into land! Get ready for a truly special journey as we take you to SCHERMERHORN, home to three of the oldest and most picturesque traditional Dutch windmills. One of these historic mills has been transformed into a fascinating museum, where you can step inside and explore its intricate mechanics from top to bottom. Feel the history, hear the creaking of the wooden beams, and witness firsthand how these engineering marvels kept the land dry for centuries!
Village walk in pretty De Rijp: Next, we take you to one of the most picturesque villages in the Netherlands—DE RIJP. Step back in time as we stroll along its charming canal, lined with beautifully preserved wooden houses. This village tells the story of the Dutch Golden Age, including the magnificent town hall. Walking through De Rijp feels like wandering through an open-air museum—only this is no replica; it’s the real deal!
Fishing village of Den Oever: Our journey continues to Den Oever, a lively fishing village with a deep connection to the sea. Here, we take a refreshing walk along the dike, leading to a viewpoint overlooking the Wadden Sea. After soaking in the panoramic views, we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch at Restaurant Basalt, where—naturally—the seafood is as fresh as it gets!
The impressive Enclosing Dike Next, we head into the province of Friesland, crossing one of the most legendary feats of Dutch engineering—the Afsluitdijk (Enclosing Dike). This remarkable 32-kilometer-long structure isn’t just a road; it’s a man-made barrier that tames an entire sea, protecting the Netherlands from flooding.
Franeker, one of the legendary 11 towns of Friesland: After lunch, we make our way to the historic town of Franeker, where we stroll past stunning monuments, including the charming grain carriers' cottage. The highlight of our visit of franeker is the extraordinary Eise Eisinga Planetarium, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Housed in a beautiful canal-side home, this masterpiece features the world's oldest working planetarium—a mesmerizing, centuries-old model of the solar system displayed on the ceiling, still functioning with remarkable precision today.
