The temple was dismantled when the Aswan High Dam was constructed and was part of a major relocation project for archaeological sites under the UNESCO Nubia Campaign. Stop at the stone quarries to see the unfinished obelisk, lies abandoned in the bedrock. It is the largest known ancient obelisk illustrating the skills of Egypt’s stonemasons. Marks from workers’ tools are still clearly visible on the bedrock. This large unfinished obelisk in the Northern Quarries has provided valuable insight into how these monuments were created. Obelisks were Hatsheput,s favorite vehicle for royal propaganda and confirming her legitimacy and her special relationship to the gods.
