    Temple of Philae

Enjoy riding a motorized boat to Philae Temple, dedicated to the goddess Isis on Agilkia Island. The temple was dismantled when the Aswan High Dam was constructed and was part of a major relocation project for archaeological sites under the UNESCO Nubia Campaign. As you pass through the central doorway, you will see Birth House (Mammisi), dedicated to Hathor-Isis in honor of the birth of her son Horus. Gaze at the particularly interesting reliefs which depict scenes from the childhood of Horus, including Horus as a falcon in the swamps of the Delta and Isis suckling Horus in the swamps. It was the place for pilgrimage through centuries. Many inscriptions show that pilgrims flocked to Philae in Greek and Roman times to pay homage to the mysterious and benign Isis, goddess of healing. Explore also the temple of Hathor built in honor of Hathor-Aphrodite , and Kiosk of Trajan.

Stop at the stone quarries to see the unfinished obelisk, lies abandoned in the bedrock. It is the largest known ancient obelisk illustrating the skills of Egypt’s stonemasons. Marks from workers’ tools are still clearly visible on the bedrock. This large unfinished obelisk in the Northern Quarries has provided valuable insight into how these monuments were created. Obelisks were Hatsheput,s favorite vehicle for royal propaganda and confirming her legitimacy and her special relationship to the gods.
