    Galle Dutch Fort

Galle Fort , in the Bay of Galle on the southwest coast of Sri Lanka, was built first in 1588 by the Portuguese, then extensively fortified by the Dutch during the 17th century from 1649 onwards. It is a historical, archaeological and architectural heritage monument, which even after more than 432 years maintains a polished appearance, due to extensive reconstruction work done by Archaeological Department of Sri Lanka. The fort has a colourful history, and today has a multi-ethnic and multi-religious population. The Sri Lankan government and many Dutch people who still own some of the properties inside the fort are looking at making this one of the modern wonders of the world. The heritage value of the fort has been recognized by the UNESCO and the site has been inscribed as a cultural heritage UNESCO World Heritage Site under criteria iv, for its unique exposition of "an urban ensemble which illustrates the interaction of European architecture and South Asian traditions from the 16th to the 19th centuries."

    Jungle Beach

The Jungle beach is located between Galle and Unawatuna. This place is less known to tourists and is thus less crowded which makes it appealing for the people visiting this place. This beach is basically special for its location since it lies close to the jungle. The clean and sandy beach provides a panoramic view of the city of Galle and a perfect place to watch the sunsets. You can also go to this place on foot which is a through a very beautiful trail which is clearly marked. The place is also accessible through boats and is a different experience altogether. The beach has several beds and places to lie down and relax. The place also has decent restaurants which serve excellent food. The jungle beach is the perfect place for snorkeling where you can see some colorful fishes. The equipment and gear required for snorkeling is available on rent and can be obtained easily. The jungle beach is a peaceful and quite little beach, which is great for swimming!

    stilt fishermen Sri Lanka

Stilt Fishing is one of the most interesting traditional fishing methods of Sri Lanka. Records indicate that it came into being just after World War II. This mode of fishing was more widely used all along the coast until the tsunami in 2004 which caused such activities to cease temporarily until recent years. The beautiful sight of fishermen perched branched poles as they fish skillfully during dawn, noon and dusk; can now be commonly along the southern coast in towns such as Koggala, Kaththaluwa and Ahangama. Occasional stilt fishermen can also be seen amongst the waters of Madu River, etc.
