Often overlooked but probably the most beautiful of the coastal towns in the area, Portovenere is also the oldest, with historical wonders such as the Church of San Pietro that looks almost camouflaged on the sheer rock face at the westernmost point of the country, and the dominant Castle Doria overlooking the town. UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Cinque Terre

As we continue to sail along the coast, the first of the Cinque Terre villages that we will meet is Riomaggiore. With brightly colored houses built vertically on the surrounding hills, Riomaggiore is the second largest of the five towns and is widely known for excellent diving spots off its coast in the marine protected area that stretches all along the Cinque Terre. Here you will also see where the famous Via del Amore pedestrian path begins, leading to nearby Manarola.

A short climb along the coast, we find Manarola, which is located at the other end of the Via dell'Amore and is part of the municipality of Riomaggiore. Known for its wine production, Manarola produces the only dessert wine called Sciacchetrà found only in this area.
