Palmaria Island, located in the Gulf of La Spezia and part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site together with Portovenere and the Cinque Terre, is the largest island in the Ligurian Sea. Known for its rugged beauty and rich natural environment, Palmaria offers a fascinating mix of rocky cliffs, dense Mediterranean vegetation and crystal clear waters. The island is a paradise for hikers and nature lovers, with well-marked trails offering stunning panoramic views of the sea and surrounding coastline. Visitors can explore the impressive Blue Grotto, a sea cave with striking blue waters, and the historic fortifications that dot the island, remnants of its strategic military importance. Palmaria is also known for its black marble, called Portoro, once extracted from the now abandoned quarry on the island. The Isola del Tino, located in the Gulf of La Spezia, is a small but rich historical part of the UNESCO world heritage site that includes Portovenere and the Cinque Terre. The island is known for its rugged landscape, dense vegetation and its significant historical and cultural heritage. Tino Island is home to the remains of a 6th century monastery dedicated to San Venerio, patron saint of lighthouse keepers. The Tino Lighthouse is also located on the island, which has guided sailors safely since the 19th century. Due to its historical and military importance, Isola del Tino is mostly a reserved military area, but opens to the public once a year on September 13th, the feast day of San Venerio. Surrounded by clear, turquoise waters and offering breathtaking views of the Ligurian coast.
