Montecassino Abbey history starts very long ago, in 529 A.D when Saint benedict built it. It has been destroyed many times because of invasions and an earthquake, but the most famous time was the bombing during WWII in February 1994. It has been rebuilt, after the war and nowadays you can visit the inside in all its glory.
The project of the cemetery was made by the son of one of the soldiers involved in the war in Montecassino. The cemetery hosts the tombs of 1051 soldiers who lost their lives during the war. It is the tomb of the Polish general Władysław Anders too.
The Commonwealth War Cemetery for the various military groups and nationalities who are held in high esteem by the local people. New Zealand, US, French, British and so many others who helped to free Italy from the grip if the Third Reich.
The village of Sant'Angelo, the battlefield of the Rapido River, the Freedom Bell near that site.
The village of San Pietro was completely destroyed in late 1943 by fighting between the advancing U.S. forces seeking to break the Winter Line and the defending German troops. The Parco della Memoria Storica (History Memorial Park) contains the ruins of the village, still laying as they were at the end of the war.
