On 11 January of 1148, the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques, regained Óbidos from the Arabs with help of Gonçalo Mendes da Maia. The construction of the settlement’s fortress is attributed to this event. The medieval village of the XII. century is famous for it’s Medieval Festival (between July and August), where the visitors can experience how people lived in the village during this age, and for the sour cherry liqueur, served in chocolate jars.
