Soon, we will reach Mount Irschenberg, the most stunning viewpoint you can experience from a German highway. This motorway route was constructed in the mid-1930s as a "panoramic motorway." These now unconventional paths were part of National Socialist propaganda: the beauty of the landscape was exploited by intentionally presenting it as a symbol of the "German Homeland."

    Dokumentationszentrum Obersalzberg

After exploring Obersalzberg, we will stop at the "World War II Memorial and Educational Center" for an audio guided tour through the exhibition. The Dokumentation Obersalzberg is a museum in the Obersalzberg resort near Berchtesgaden, providing information on the use of the mountainside retreat by Nazi leaders, especially Adolf Hitler who regularly spent time in this area beginning in 1928. The museum was opened in 1999, and by 2007 had been visited by more than one million people.

The darkest chapter of Berchtesgaden's history occurred on the Obersalzberg, known as "Hitler's Alpine Fortress." This plateau, located below the "Eagle's Nest" at a height of 1,000 meters (3,200 feet), was largely seized by Hitler and his entourage and designated as the "Führersperrgebiet" (Leader's Restricted Area) starting in 1933. On April 25, 1945, approximately 1,300 bombs destroyed nearly the entire area, with the "Eagle's Nest" (Kehlsteinhaus) and a few other buildings being spared. In 1952, the ruins of most bombed-out buildings were either demolished or blown up, though some were rebuilt, such as the Hotel Türken. I would be happy to show you the remaining sites, including the locations of Hermann Göring's and Martin Bormann's houses, as well as Hitler's 'Berghof' and much more.
