The Chafariz de El-Rei, which was probably the first public fountain in the city of Lisbon, was built in the 13th century, taking advantage of the excellent waters of the Alfama hillside.
It was once called Chafariz dos Cavalos (Horse Fountain), and it's Alfama's central plaza. Its current name comes from the fact that it is located within the walls of the Fernandina wall.
