Kotsuzumi Drum Experience in Kyoto

1 hour (approximately)
Offered in: English

Noh, considered one of the oldest performing arts in the world, has been captivating audiences since the end 14th century. At the heart of its unique sound is the Kotsuzumi, a small, hourglass shaped shoulder drum that plays a vital role in shaping the rhythms and atmosphere of the performance. Crafted from cherry wood with black lacquer and gold accents, the drum features horse skin drumheads held in place by hemp cords. The player sits with the drum on their left shoulder, adjusting its pitch by squeezing and releasing the cords while striking the drum with the right hand.
