The mountainous, provincial road climbs the eastern slopes of Psiloritis and offers incredible views of Heraklion and the Cretan Sea.
Soon we reach Krousonas and through a dirt road, which runs parallel to the homonymous gorge, to the plateau. The place is beautiful with thousands of pear and apple trees scattered all over.
The dirt road will lead us tothe plateau of Nida, where we will visit IdaionAndron, the cave where Zeus was raised. From there, we will head to Anogia for a stop in a traditional kafenion. After we will go to Axos village and have free time in woodcraft museum. Our trip continues to Livadia and Psiloritis Chalet Retreat where we will have our cooking lesson – preparing traditional cheese and local specialties. The return to Heraklion will be through the provincial road Heraklion – Anogia.

The Nida Plateau, located at around 1,400 meters on Mount Psiloritis in Crete, is a stunning high-altitude plain surrounded by majestic peaks. It is known for its traditional shepherd huts (mitata), beautiful hiking trails, and the mythical Idaean Cave, where Zeus is said to have been raised. A visit offers a unique blend of natural beauty, Cretan tradition, and ancient mythology.
The dirt road will lead us to the plateau of Nida, where we will visit Idaion Andron, the cave where Zeus was raised. The Ideon Cave, is one of the most sacred sites of ancient Greek mythology.
Anogia is one of the most iconic and historic villages of Crete, known for its strong cultural identity and warm hospitality. We'll take a short break at a traditional kafenion, where you’ll enjoy the rich aroma and taste of authentic Greek coffee, just like the locals do. It’s a perfect moment to soak in the village’s unique atmosphere and timeless charm.
Psiloritis is the mountain where according to mythology, Zeus was raised by the Kourites and the nymph Amalthea. Psiloritis has been a UNESCO-recognized Geopark since 2001. Within its boundaries, you can see faults, fossils, caves, gorges, and plateaus, which host many endemic species of the island and have shaped the culture of the locals.
Our journey continues to the picturesque village of Livadia and the charming Psiloritis Chalet Retreat, where an unforgettable culinary experience awaits. There, we’ll take part in a hands-on cooking lesson, learning to prepare traditional Cretan cheese and a variety of authentic local delicacies, guided by the warm hospitality and expertise of local cooks. After enjoying the fruits of our labor, we’ll begin our scenic return to Heraklion via the provincial Heraklion–Anogia road, taking with us the flavors and memories of true Cretan life.
