Passing the traditional village of Sternes on a scenic dirt track, you encounter shepherd shelters and grazing sheep and goats, a living reflection of the island’s centuries-old pastoral culture, while dramatic views open toward the fertile Mesara Valley, dotted with olive groves and vineyards that trace back to the Minoan era. A short 15-minute hike brings you to the summit of Kofinas, rising 1,231 meters above sea level. From this breathtaking viewpoint, a 360-degree panorama unfolds: the vast Mesara Valley to the north, the endless blue of the Libyan Sea to the south. As the sun descends, take in the serenity of the mountains while sipping traditional Greek coffee, witnessing the sky and sea transform into golden and crimson hues.
