The Chagall choir windows in St. Stephan's are unique in Germany. Bathe in the beautiful blue glow as the daylight streams through the windows and enjoy this very special heavenly experience and then stroll through the most beautiful parts of Old Mainz.
I will meet you on the small square outside the main entrance of St. Stephan's church.
Unless otherwise arranged, the tour will end at the Market Square
Admired by more than 200,000 visitors a year, this major tourist attraction was originally built in 990 AD as the “Imperial Place of Prayer”. Today, St. Stephan’s Church contains 9 outstanding blue stained glass windows by the Jewish-Russian artist Marc Chagall. Already 89 years old, Chagall started designing his message of hope for this beautiful little church and finished the final window shortly before his death at the age of 97. Get to know the different scenes from the Old Testament like Adam and Eve in Paradise and Jacob's Dream then step into the small late-Gothic cloister, one of the prettiest along the Middle Rhine.
From St. Stephan's, we will stroll to the nearby pedestrianised old town ("Altstadt"). We will walk along the romantic winding lanes of the medieval part of the city and discover picturesque little squares such as the Cherry Orchard ("Kirschgarten") with its half-timbered houses.
We will then wander around the magnificent cathedral square stopping at its colourful, ornately decorated old houses and the beautiful renaissance well. If we are lucky, we will also experience the traditional farmers' market which still takes place here every Tuesday, Friday and Saturday (until 14:00) as it has for centuries.
