What to expect

Climb Mount Pico, Portugal’s highest mountain at 2,351 metres, with a professional local mountain guide. The ascent follows a steep and irregular volcanic trail from Casa da Montanha at approximately 1,230 metres to the summit, covering around 8 km round trip and approximately 1,100 metres of elevation gain.

The climb usually takes around 7–9 hours, depending on the group’s pace, trail conditions and weather. The terrain includes solidified lava, volcanic rock and sections that require careful footing and scrambling, making good physical condition and coordination important.

Throughout the experience, your guide manages the pace and safety of the group while sharing knowledge about Mount Pico’s volcanic geology, biodiversity and natural environment.

Weather plays an essential role on Mount Pico. Wind, cloud cover and precipitation are carefully considered when assessing mountain conditions and the safe progression of the climb.
