This tour combines a walking tour with a nice, light meal at the end. We start with a brief introduction at Vrijdagmarkt and then go on an explorer journey for 1.5 to 2 hours (including the meal).
During this time you will find out where the name Ghent comes from and visit the very origins of our city, which is almost 1400 years old.
Explore sites such as our yacht harbour (Portus Ganda), the tree medieval towers (Saint Bavo Cathedral, the Ghent Belfry and Saint Nicholas Church) and the historical harbour with Graslei and Korenlei quays.
Ghent is however so much more then this. It is the home of 3 beguinages, some exquisite museums, parks, host of the 1913 World Expo and capital of street art (and we do not just mean the popular Graffiti Street).
Furthermore, it is a lively city where visitors, residents and students meet. We look forward to welcoming you!
We meet all travellers at the Jacob Van Artevelde statue, which is situated in the middle of the square. It is walking distance (10 mins) from Korenmarkt. You can reach Korenmarkt with tram 1 direction Wondelgem or Evergem and you can take it straight at the Sint Pieters Station.
The tour brings you back to the centre. As we change lunch suppliers, you might end on a different side of the city. Either you can walk back or take a bus or tram.
We start this walking tour with lunch in Ghent at the Artevelde statue at Friday Market. This is a historical square with interesting houses and some cool facts. After a brief introduction and information about what to expect, we explore the square and the surrounding streets. Please note that this itinerary is an example only. If people have a good fitness level (not mandatory though!!) we can cover more ground and therefore also different areas. Also, although it says that we do not make any stops, we do make stops at all landmarks so you can hear the stories told by your guide and to take pictures. We just cannot say how long we will be staying somewhere as that depends on the group. Just so you know :) When you book, please let us know your fitness level.
Following the discovery of Friday Market and surroundings, your guide will take you to another highlight of our city - the Castle of the Counts (Gravensteen). This is a medieval castle with a lot of stories to tell. Your guide will take you to the surrounding areas as well. For instance, Saint Veerle Square, Patershol, Prinsenhof and so on.
From the Castle of the Counts, get yourself to the very heart of Ghent's old town with your guide. Graslei and Korenlei are not to be missed areas. This was the place to be in the Middle Ages, but it is still the most popular area to hang out. Your guide will explain to you its importance and tell you some hidden secrets.
The Ghent Belfry is one of the oldest in Belgium and next on your itinerary. As a matter of fact, you will get to see the Saint Nicolas Church, the Belfry and the Saint Bavo Cathedral all at once. These are the 3 Medieval towers of Ghent.
We finish the tour with a light lunch at one of the many eateries Ghent offers. We will surprise you by something traditional such as beef stew and fries or perhaps a trendy plant-based meal. In any case, it is will be very delicious! Please inform us before your booking if you have any allergies or intolerances, so we can cater for your needs.
