This 3-Day trip is the perfect opportunity to fully discover the Cuenca region. You will explore the historic UNESCO-recognized center of Cuenca, the breathtaking Cajas National Park, the historically significant Ingapirca ruins, known as the Ecuadorian Machu Pichi, and the artisan villages of Gualaceo and Chordeleg. Our 3 day journey through the Cuenca region begins with a half day city trip in the city of Cuenca. We start off in San Sebastian neighborhood, a traditional neighborhood of Cuenca in which we will stop by the Modern Art Museum, where the famous Bienal International of Cuenca takes a place. It belongs to a select group of macro art events established in Latin America and the Caribbean. You'll get the chance to explore not only the exhibits but also the historical house with its traditional architecture. We also visit the San Francisco market, the flower market, Abdon Calderon Park, “El Sagrario”, known as the “Old Cathedral”, and lastly, we will admire the fascinating “New Cathedral” which is considered one of the most impressive and largest cathedrals in Latin America.
We continue our tour to a Panama hat factory, where we’ll observe and learn about the fabrication of a fiber called “Paja toquilla.” Our guide will tell you not only about the process of making this hats but also the story of why the call them "Panama Hats" and the importance of this product in the local economy. These hats range from classic simple ones to colorful, elegantly designed and costly ones.
Afterwards, we will drive through the “Barranco” which is an area of terraced houses located next to the Tomebamba River. Our final destination is “Mirador de Turi”, a scenic viewpoint where we'll get to enjoy the beautiful vista of Cuenca and the Andes mountains resting beyond the city.
To begin our second day, we will visit one of Ecuador’s most remarkable natural wonders, Cajas National Park. Our first stop, Laguna Toreadora, takes approximately 45 minutes from Cuenca’s city center. Upon arrival, we will embark on a moderate two-hour hike (duration may vary depending on the group’s pace) through the stunning high-altitude moorland, characterized by wetlands and glacial lakes. Accompanied by our expert naturalist guide, you will have the opportunity to identify endemic flora and learn about the park’s unique geology, history, and cultural significance. The hike culminates in the fascinating Polylepis forest, home to some of the highest-growing trees in the world, offering an unparalleled glimpse into this extraordinary Andean ecosystem.
Discover the hidden beauty of Llaviuco, a lush cloud forest, this serene destination offers a unique contrast to the park’s rugged landscapes, featuring dense vegetation, tranquil waters, and diverse wildlife. Enjoy a leisurely hike around Llaviuco Lake, surrounded by towering Andean trees, vibrant moss-covered trails, and a peaceful atmosphere. This area is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to species such as Andean toucans and hummingbirds. As you walk, your guide will introduce you to the fascinating flora and fauna that thrive in this high-altitude cloud forest.
On the last day of our explorations of the Cuenca region, we will visit one of Ecuador's main historical and archaeological highlights, the Ingapirca Ruins, following a visit to the artisan villages of Gualaceo and Chordeleg, famous for its traditional art. A day-trip offering the perfect blend between Ecuadorian culture and history. We start our tour with a ride towards the valley of Cañar through the breathtaking highlands, offering amazing views along the way. We arrive at Ingapirca, Ecuador’s major Inca archaeological site, located approximately 60 miles northeast of Cuenca at 10,500 feet above sea level. Here you will have the opportunity to thoroughly explore the fascinating ruins and listen to the rare and captivating facts and information provided by our knowledgable guide. The time in the ruins highlights a visit to the Cañari constructed temple of the moon and the Inca constructed Temple of the Sun, 2 incredible places characteristic to both those ancient civilisations.
We continue our tour to Gualaceo and Chordeleg, two charming villages famous for handicrafts. After we enjoyed a proper lunch in Gualaceo, we will visit a workshop in Chordeleg where artisans produce the finest silver filigree in Ecuador. A unique opportunity to gain more insight into the local culture. There will also be time for shopping or simply admiring the interesting atmosphere of the town.
Our final stop will be at a local family’s workshop where we’ll see the process of weaving shawls and ponchos on antique looms, using dyes extracted from plants. As the tour comes to a conclusion, we will conveniently get you back to your accommodation in Cuenca or drop you off at the airport.
