Our tour ends in the middle of the old town of Constance.
Meeting point for guided city tour experience with wine tasting is the Historic Harbour Clock. It is located between the Council building and the ticket office of the Bodensee shipyards - right at the end of the Marktstätten underpass. Here our guide and wine ambassador will welcome you and hand you your wine glasses. Look forward to a fun and enjoyable walk through the old Council town on Lake Constance!
Just a few steps away is the port of Constance. The location of the port offers a wide view over Lake Constance and the nearby Alps. A good place to drink a glass of Prosecco or a light white wine to the port of Imperia, the new landmark of the city of Konstanz! An impressive statue of an equally impressive lady!
Directly at the port is the historic Council building. A pope was elected here in 1417. During a typical Lake Constance wine, our guide and wine ambassador will tell you why Constance became the center of world affairs at that time and what happened during the four-year Council period. Here you can also learn how the port beauty Imperia in Constance turned the heads of all men 600 years ago, during the Council period. Let the stories and anecdotes of our guides take you back to the not-so-dark Middle Ages!
Overlooking Lake Constance and the opposite vineyards of Meersburg, you will enjoy a delicious Lake Constance wine and learn what makes winegrowing on Lake Constance so special.
Here at the old Konstanz fish market stands the "Hohe Haus". It dates back to 1294 and was supposedly built from top to bottom... Let yourself be surprised by what selected wine from Lake Constance our guide will pour you under the arcades of the historic fish market!
The historic center of the city of Konstanz is the Münster. Let our guide show you the special features of the former Episcopal Church and experience a piece of contemporary history to touch. You will learn all about the architecture and history of this venerable cathedral, where even a pope was crowned in 1417. Over a delicious glass of Lake Constance wine, you will also learn which wine was drunk during the Council period and how the wine industry on Lake Constance has changed since then.
The sprawling Konstanz Minster Square is lined with baroque residences of the former Konstanz cathedral lords, many of whom were owned by vineyards on Lake Constance. Over another glass of Lake Constance wine, our guide will tell you how the vineyards came to be managed by cooperatives and private winemakers today. Here on Münsterplatz there is also a city relief that gives a good overview of today's Constance.
In the oldest district of Konstanz, the Niederburg, medieval stone houses, pawnshops of wealthy cathedral owners and impressive administrative buildings from the Baroque period still dominate today. Walking through the narrow old streets and with the anecdotes of our guides, you will see a vivid image of a very well-preserved medieval city. Last but not least, the remains of the Roman castle built by the Romans in the 4th century lie here. Of course, our guide will also serve you an excellent wine of the Lake Constance region. After all, it was the Romans who brought viticulture to Lake Constance.
The Rhine Gate Tower, built around 1300, is located on the edge of the Niederburg. It is a relic of the old city walls and once connected the two banks of the Rhine with a wooden bridge. Directly below is also the km 0 of the German Rhine census. Here the Rhine is called "Seerhein", because a few hundred meters later it becomes wider again and forms the Untersee, in which the island Reichenau is located. An ideal place to taste a glass of wine from the island of Reichenau!
The Wessenbergstraße leads through the middle of the pedestrian zone of Konstanz. The name goes back to Ignaz Heinrich von Wessenberg, the last bishopric administrator. Here you can taste the wine that Baron von Wessenberg already enjoyed!
In fact, St Stephen's Church in Constance is the same age as the cathedral in Constance, but it was and is "only" a parish church - unlike the cathedral in its function as a former Episcopal church. In the shade of this beautiful parish church, you can enjoy a last glass of wine from Lake Constance - or perhaps another, more high-percentage delicacies made by an expert distillery from the fruits that thrive in the mild climate of Lake Constance. Did you know that the Lake Constance region is Germany's largest apple-growing region? Then let our guide surprise you...
