Standing tall, as if guarding the entry into the southern end of the Western Bays, the Karangahape cliffs have to be seen to be believed. The cliffs plummet into the inky depths of the lake below and stretch high up above us as the boat takes you right up to the cliff face.

Te Papa Bay is known for its pristine, crystal clear waters with an amazing sand bank just meters below the surface where the hidden Waikino falls spills out into the lake from the rock face at lake level. This is the perfect spot for swimming and paddle boarding. To the left of the bay is a set of flat rocks known by the locals as flat rock café. It’s the perfect place to set up a picnic and jump off the rocks.
