What to expect
Your first landmark is Castel Sant'Elmo, the 14th-century star-shaped fortress carved from the tufa rock of the Vomero hill, whose battlements offer panoramic views across Naples, the bay, and Vesuvius on the horizon — a view that rewards the climb to get here.
From there the app takes you to the Gradini del Petraio, a long staircase descending through the hillside between the Vomero and the lower districts, lined with plants, laundry, and the authentic residential life of Naples that most visitors never encounter.
The route then leads along the Via Luigia Sanfelice, a quiet residential street named after the Neapolitan revolutionary executed in 1799, where the everyday character of the Vomero neighbourhood — its bars, its balconies, its pace — unfolds without any of the tourist pressure of the old town below.
Around 2 hours on foot. The Vomero is best reached by funicular.
