What to expect

Starting at the Jardim da Manga, you'll open the Explorial app, enter the 6-digit game code that you received by text and Viator chat message, and get your bearings in Coimbra's lower town. The tour is fully self-guided — no guide, no fixed start time, just your group and the city.

The Jardim da Manga itself opens the hunt — a lemon-yellow Renaissance cloister-fountain said to have been sketched on a sleeve, and one of Portugal's oddest monuments. Riddles start right at its arches.

The Mosteiro de Santa Cruz follows, guarding the tombs of Portugal's first two kings. Trivia pays its respects to Afonso Henriques before moving on.

Then the route climbs the student-worn streets to the Paço das Escolas, the hilltop courtyard where black-caped students have graduated for seven centuries, with the Joanina Library and bell tower crowning the view.

Around two hours of slopes and scholarship covers it. The leaderboard posts the final grades — no resits.
