What to expect
Your first landmark is the Castello di San Giorgio, the 14th-century castle within the Palazzo Ducale complex where Andrea Mantegna painted the Camera degli Sposi, one of the great masterpieces of Italian Renaissance art.
From there the app takes you to the Casa di Rigoletto, the house traditionally associated with the hunchback jester from Verdi's opera — a fiction, but one that Mantua has embraced with characteristic grace, placing a bronze Rigoletto in the courtyard outside.
The route concludes at the Pescherie di Giulio Romano, a fish market arcade designed by Giulio Romano in 1536 whose loggias still span the Mincio river — a piece of everyday Renaissance architecture as elegant as any palazzo in the city.
Around 2 hours on foot through the compact old centre, which UNESCO recognised as a World Heritage Site in 2008.
