Gelsenkirchen is known for football and coal — but its streets have more layers than either would suggest.

This app-led scavenger hunt takes you through Gelsenkirchen on foot, using phone-based riddles to guide you from one landmark to the next. No guide, no fixed start time.

• Follow the riddles to the Propsteikirche St. Augustinus, the Eckhaus der Nachkriegszeit, and the remarkable Hans-Sachs-Haus — each a chapter in the city's resilient story
• No time pressure, no tour group — start when you're ready and walk the route at your own pace
• A fun challenge for families, school trips, or any group who wants to see the city properly

What to expect

Starting in central Gelsenkirchen (postal code 45), open the Explorial app and enter the 6-digit game code that you received by text and Viator chat message to begin.

The route takes you through a city that rebuilt itself after the industrial age and found new identities in culture, sport, and urban renewal. The first riddles bring you to the Propsteikirche St. Augustinus, the city's striking Catholic church and a landmark that has anchored the community through significant change.

Next, the app guides you to the Eckhaus der Nachkriegszeit, a significant example of postwar architecture that tells the story of Gelsenkirchen's reconstruction after the Second World War.

The trail then leads to the Hans-Sachs-Haus, an Art Deco masterpiece that served as city hall and is now a civic and cultural venue — one of the finest buildings of its era in the Ruhr region.

Around 2 hours of walking, any group size. A fully charged smartphone with mobile data is required.
