We take in the majestic vista from the top of Paekakariki Hill, visit the memorial to the American Marines of World War 2 at Queen Elizabeth Park, visit Southwards Car Museum housing a collection of over 400 vehicles, lunch at a popular Waikanae Beach restaurant, view native birdlife at Nga Manu Wildlife Centre and finish our afternoon sampling delectable Gelato.
CRUISE PASSENGERS - Please note the following important information: Pick up Wellington cruise port terminal, Aotea Quay: We will meet you on the Port at the Independent Tour Operators Pick Up Point. Please note the Port has limited shelter so we recommend waiting until the first rush of visitors has gone through. In the case of bad weather, it will also make your disembarkation more pleasant. DO NOT catch the bus to the Wellington i-SITE. Stay at the port. Disembarkation Directions: • When you disembark, please walk past the buses to the Independent Tour Operators Pick Up Point. There will be people to direct you. • Your Kaewa Tours Guide will be there holding a sign with your name on it. • Your Kaewa Tours Guide will be wearing an orange or a yellow high vis’ vest. Wellington Railway Station: Pick-ups are from outside the front entrance on Bunny Street. Note: For cruise ship passengers this tour will operate on a slightly reduced itinerary.
We drive up to the top of Paekakariki Hill to take in the majestic view over the Kapiti Coast, Kapiti Island, the top of the South Island and on a clear day we may see Mt Taranaki/Egmont and Mt Ruapehu.
At Ngā Manu we can view Tuataras up close, take a guided tour with one of the Ngā Manu Guides through the native bird aviaries. Visit the nocturnal house where if you are lucky you may see a Kiwi or 2.
We have lunch at one of Waikanae's popular restaurants - Hey Coastie or Long Beach Cafe followed by a visit to Waikanae Beach to view Kāpiti Island and the top of the South Island (on a clear day!).
We visit the world famous Southwards Car Museum housing a collection of over 400 vehicles, as well as three aircraft. Southwards is one of the largest private motor vehicle collections in the Southern Hemisphere.
We visit Camp McKay at Paekakariki where the US Marine Corps were based in World War 2 prior to heading up into the Pacific campaign. Here we take a tour of the area with one of the Volunteer Historians who will share what life was like for the American Marines and locals during World War 2.
We finish our day with sampling award winning Gelato from Zelati.
