The walled village of Monsaraz is located atop a hill overlooking the Guadiana River and the modern Spanish border. Archaeological evidence indicates that the village has been occupied, in some form, since prehistory – understandable given its important location.
The picturesque town boasts historic monuments, traditional homes, restaurants, cafes, and shops selling locally made products. Particularly notable is the Castle of Monsaraz, built by the Portuguese King Dinis in the 14th century.
