This tour offers a unique opportunity to explore Portugal's archaeology and history, from the 16th century AD to the 6th millenium BC.

On this tour, you will get to explore the medieval village and 16th century castle of Evoramonte, the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, and the megalithic site of the Cromlech of Almendres.

Please note that pick-up time will vary according to how many groups are booked on a single tour. If you choose the hotel pick-up option, your pick-up time may be as much as 30 minutes prior to the tour start time (9:00am). When you have made your booking, please specify the hotel you would like to be picked up from. We will let let you know what time you should be ready in your hotel lobby at least 24 hours prior to the tour. You will be greeted by your Tour Guide outside of your hotel. Children under the age of 12 or under 1.5 meters in height are required to sit in the back seat of the vehicle in a child car seat or booster that is appropriate to their size. We do not provide car seats, so please remember to bring your own. Please wear appropriate footwear (sneakers or hiking shoes are suggested) as reaching the sites requires some walking along dirt footpaths. Please note that these footpaths may be muddy after rainy weather.

    Our tour commences in the heart of Évora, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site. We will gather at the Roman Temple of Évora (also known as the Temple of Diana) at 9:00am. From there, we will embark on a 30-minute car ride to reach the village of Evoramonte. This remarkable village stands proudly atop one of the highest points in the Serra d’Ossa mountain range, offering breathtaking views and a unique photographic opportunity to capture the scenic beauty of the Alentejo region.

    If the castle is open, we will then proceed to visit the unique 16th century Castle of Evoramonte. Here you’ll delve deeper into the history of the village. Once everyone is ready, we will proceed to our next stop – the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, around 45 minutes away.

    While en route to the Roman villa of Torre de Palma, situated a little over an hour away, we will continue our discussion. At this site, you will learn more about the Roman villa culture of Portugal and have the opportunity to visit the charming museum, the well-preserved Roman structures, and, most notably, the exquisite collection of mosaics. You will have some free time to explore Torre de Palma at your own pace, and by 12:30 we will proceed to our next stop – lunch, around 30 minutes away.

    Although lunch is not included in the tour, we believe that one should have a beautiful setting to enjoy their meal. In turn, we will stop to eat in the town of Estremoz, 30 minutes away from Torre de Palma. Here, there are a few options for a light lunch (not provided) at a local cafe or restaurant, or alternatively, you may choose to eat a lunch that you have packed.

    We will leave Estremoz around 2:15pm and make the 1 hour and 15 minute drive & 30 minute walk (one-way) to the Cromlech of Almendres, often referred to as the Stonehenge of Portugal. At the site, we will discuss the emergence of the Neolithic in the region and provide an overview of the theories associated with the monument. You will learn about the history of this spectacular site from archaeologists specializing in the prehistory of this region.
