Hvolsvöllur is an excellent base for camper travelers thanks to its location directly on the Ring Road, with easy access to South Coast highlights and inland routes toward Þórsmörk and Landmannalaugar. The campsite sits just steps from shops, restaurants, fuel, and a swimming pool, making resupply and comfort effortless after a day on the road. Sheltered by trees and well equipped, it offers a quiet, practical overnight stop without sacrificing services or connectivity. This will be our base for 3 nights

Kirkjubaejarklaustur
Kirkjubæjarklaustur, often simply called Klaustur, is a small village in South Iceland, located directly on the Ring Road between Vík and Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Surrounded by lava fields, waterfalls, canyons, and volcanic history, Kirkjubæjarklaustur offers a peaceful atmosphere away from crowds while still being close to major natural attractions. The name Kirkjubæjarklaustur translates to “church farm cloister”, reflecting the area’s strong Christian roots. A Benedictine convent was established here in the late 12th century, and local landmarks such as Systrafoss and Systrastapi are tied to legends of the nuns who once lived here. The region was also heavily shaped by the Laki eruption (1783–1784), one of the largest volcanic events in Icelandic history, which created vast lava fields that still dominate the surrounding landscape today.
