Phajoding Monastery ,a sacred Buddhist site at 3600m,nestled on the ridge directly above Thimpu, has several tempes, chapel halls and monk quarters. Within a few hours you hike from the bustle of the capital to the stillness of Himalayan Pine forests and centuries old monasteries. It's not just a physical ascent but a cultural and spiritual journey. The hike starts from Motithang/Sangaygang area and it covers 5 km one way. As you start the hike, you gain an altitude of 1200m,with forest trail of blue pines, rhododendrons ,oaks and prayer flags on the way. As you approach Phajoding Monastery, climbing 3-4 hours uphill, trees thin out, revealing expansive views over Thimpu. All of Thimpu Valley spreads below. On very clear days,you might glimpse higher Himalayan peaks across North. Once on top, enjoy the quiet, serence, punctuated by chants of monks and fluttering of prayer flags.
ITINERARY- 8:00 am-Start from Thimpu town.(short drive to the trail head) 8:15 am-Begin hike at Sangaygang/BBS Tower area. 11:30 am-12:00 pm-Arrive Phajoding Monastery.Explore temples and soak in the views. 12:30 pm-1:00 pm-Picnic lunch(carry your own) 1:30 pm-2:00 pm-Begin descent 3:30 pm-4:00 pm-Arrive back at trailhead,then return to Thimpu.
