This isn't a 'bucket list high altitude trek' but more of a local pilgrimages stroll. It threads together Bhutan's modern spiritual landmark -the shiny Dordenma statue completed in 2015 ,with one of its oldest surviving temples-Changangkha-800 yrs old. The blend of new grandeur and ancient tradition within hour's walk away is very 'Thimpu in miniature'.
This is an easy trek of approximate 2 hours covering 3 kms amidst forest and nature. You start your trek under watchful gaze of the Buddha Dordenma,51 m high Buddha statue that is visible from almost every corner of Thimpu. Inside are more than 125,000 smaller buddha statues. You trek a well trodden forest trail with sections marked by prayer flags. Shade is provided by blue pine and rhododendrons. It's quiet, still, and often you hear nothing but bird calls or the flutter of flags. You would occasionally encounter locals on a spiritual walk. The trek is easy ,suitable for children and older walkers. The ideal time to do the trek is morning or late afternoon when light is best. Entry fees for Buddha Point-Nu 500.
Changangkha is the 'child blessing temple' of Thimpu. Locals bring their newborns here for blessings and name. Soak in history and overlook the Thimpu town from its courtyards. You can experience the local culture where parents queue up for blessings for their babies. The trail is lined with colorful prayer flags. You will experience forest life with small birds, pine scents, moss draped trees and in spring rhododendron flowers. As you descend, views of Thimpu open up like a hidden painting framed by branches.
