    Monaco-Ville

Destination Monaco, a principality on the Mediterranean coast near the border to Italy. The city state forms an enclave within France. Official language is French. It is the smallest sovereign state in the world apart from the Vatican. Today about 38,400 people live in the principality on an area of just 2 km² making it the most densely populated city on earth (see: Countries with the highest population density). Founded in 1215 as a colony of Genoa, Monaco has been ruled by the House of Grimaldi since 1297, when François Grimaldi, known as "Malizia" seized Monaco's fortress in response to the exile imposed upon the Guelfs. For seven centuries the Grimaldi family has presided over the Principality of Monaco, except from 1789 to 1814, when Monaco was under French control. Designated as a protectorate of Sardinia from 1815 until 1860 by the Congress of Vienna, Monaco's sovereignty was recognized by the Franco-Monegasque Treaty of 1861.

Grimaud is a very nice medieval village located in Côte d'Azur, not far from Saint-Tropez. It is different village from Port Grimaud, which is located at the seaside. On the contrary, Grimaud is classic village perché. In the village area there is also a mill and a castle.Port Grimaud is called "French Venice" or "Mini Venice". It is fabulous town built purposely to be just like Venice. It is located seven kilometres south-west of Sainte Maxime and about six kilometres east of Grimaud. The town was the dream of Alsatian architect François Spoerry who in 1962 bought the marshy areas at the mouth of the river Giscle. It has been built with all channels in a Venetian manner, but with the houses having French "fishermans" style similar to those in Saint Tropez.

On the wide sidewalk at the water's edge, artists sell colorful paintings depicting scenes of Saint-Tropez.
