Misali Island is considered one of the diving paradises of East Africa, if not the world. Among the locals, Misali has religious status as they believe in the past the Prophet Suleiman bin Dawood [King Solomon], visited and used the Island as his prayer mat. Pemba had the central prison for all jinni. Many of them still stay there in the ruins. Also it was once thought of as a safe haven by the pirates of the olden days and it is still believed that the local treasure of the Notorious Pirate Captain Kidd might be awaiting discovery somewhere around here. Beautiful and extensive coral reefs, containing myriad fish and other marine life, surround the island, which hosts a rich inter-tidal ecosystem. The island is part of the Pemba Channel Conservation Area which covers Pemba's entire west coast.
