Volubilis is a partly excavated Roman city in Morocco located near Meknes between Fez and Rabat. Built in a fertile agricultural area, it developed from the 3rd century BC as a Phoenician (and later Carthaginian) colony. It grew rapidly under Roman rule from the 1st century AD and expanded to cover approximately 100 acres with a 1.6 mile circuit of walls. The city acquired a number of major public buildings in the 2nd century, including a basilica, a temple and a triumphal arch. Its prosperity, which was mainly due to olive growing, prompted the construction of many beautiful townhouses with large mosaic floors. The city fell to local tribes around 285 and was never recaptured by Rome due to its remoteness and indefensibility on the southwestern frontier of the Roman Empire. It continued to be inhabited for at least 700 years.

It is perched 550 meters above sea level, under the Djebel Zerhoun and extends over two hills, surrounded by green plains where olive trees abound. Until 1917, the city was forbidden to non-Muslims, today it retains its character as a holy city. The city clings to a hill, it's a labyrinth of stairs! Some places, called "terraces", offer a bird's eye view of the city, the mausoleum and the tangle of alleys and small houses that surround it.
