The tour finishes at the heart of the beautiful Grosvenor Park
The tour starts with a general perspective of the city, and at this particular stop, you will learn everything there is to know about the mother church of the Diocese of Chester, which is the colossal Cathedral of Chester.
In this stop, you will get insights about the ancient Roman History of Chester, you will understand the important role that the city played during the Roman conquest of Britain and learn about Roman Heritage in general.
We will walk you through and around the emblem of Chester: The Eastgate Gate and its Clock. You will learn why this beautiful clock stands atop an ancient Roman Gate and why it became an emblem of the city.
We will walk you through the City Wall of Chester, from East to North Gate, while we tell you the stories behind this wall and all its stories related: From why it was created until the reason behind why it still preserved.
In this stop, you will get the perspective of what happened in this city during the civil war, why is this cross in this specific place and what was the importance of this High Cross in the past.
You will also walk through the building that once was Chester Castle, which had been founded by William the Conqueror in 1070. Today, the only remaining of the Norman castle is the Agricola Tower. We will give you an understanding of the past of this place, as well as the tools to visualize how life should have been almost 1000 years ago in this same place.
We will walk with you to Minerva's Shrine which stands at Edgar's Field Park. It is a shrine to the Roman goddess Minerva and it is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. We will tell you all the information known about this early 2nd-century sandstone quarry and what it meant to the common folk of the time.
As one of the most important Roman Forts of its time, Chester, or Deva Victrix as it was formerly known, there were many ancient buildings and ruins spread around the city that date from ancient times. The Roman Gardens is the place where some of the buildings were reconstructed for being displayed to the public. All of which will be explained in detail as well as the reason behind why this controversial place was chosen for the creation of this garden.
The ruins currently exposed are the northern half of the structure of a large stone Roman Amphitheatre, similar to those found in Continental Europe, and it's the largest so far uncovered in Britain so far. The structure dates back to the 1st century when the Roman fort of Deva Victrix was founded, join us to learn everything you need to know about these amazing ruins.
The tour ends in the beautiful Grosvenor Park, which is a Grade II registered, Green Flag Award-winning public park located just outside the city of Chester’s historic walls overlooking the River Dee. The idea is to walk you through one of the finest examples of Victorian parks in the UK and give you the best recommendations of what to do and where to eat around the city.
