The Giza Pyramid Complex, also known as the Giza Necropolis, sits majestically on the Giza Plateau in Greater Cairo, Egypt. This world-famous archaeological site boasts the Great Pyramid of Giza, the Pyramids of Khafre and Menkaure, the iconic Great Sphinx, and several surrounding pyramid complexes. These incredible monuments date back to Egypt’s Fourth Dynasty of the Old Kingdom (circa 2600–2500 BC). Beyond the pyramids themselves, the site includes ancient cemeteries and the remains of a workers' village that played a crucial role in supporting these monumental constructions. Located on the edge of the Western Desert, roughly 9 kilometers west of the Nile and about 13 kilometers southwest of Cairo’s city center, the Giza complex forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation it shares with the nearby ancient capital, Memphis, since 1979.
The Great Sphinx of Giza is the most famous sphinx in the world. Carved directly from bedrock during Egypt’s 4th Dynasty (around 2613–2494 BC), it stands as the oldest known sphinx in the country. In ancient Egyptian culture, sphinxes symbolized the pharaoh’s power, combining a lion’s body with a human head to represent royal strength and authority.
The Egyptian Museum, the oldest archaeological museum in the Middle East, houses the world’s largest collection of Pharaonic artifacts. Its extensive exhibits cover a vast timeline, from the Predynastic Period to the Greco-Roman era. The museum’s distinctive design was chosen through the first-ever international architectural competition in 1895, won by French architect Marcel Dourgnon. Officially opened in 1902 by Khedive Abbas Helmy II, it has since become a key cultural and historical landmark in downtown Cairo, displaying some of ancient Egypt’s most remarkable treasures.
