Bunk’Art 1 is the grander, more sprawling sibling to Bunk’Art 2. Located on the outskirts of Tirana, this massive 106-room underground complex was built in the 1970s as a nuclear shelter for the dictator Enver Hoxha and his inner circle.
Inside Bunk’Art 1, Enver Hoxha’s private suite is one of the most significant and eerie sections of the museum. While the rest of the 106-room bunker is stark and industrial, this suite was designed to provide the dictator with a level of comfort—and control—even in the event of a nuclear apocalypse.
