The South Adventure is the perfect journey for those looking for a unique trip to Iceland, rather than the typical sightseeing. It combines the highlands and the must-see of the South part of the island, trekkings, thermal springs, and incredible excursions. We will be kayaking between the icebergs and walking through a glacier tongue with a local guide on Europe’s biggest glacier! We won’t miss breaks in the natural and artificial spas with hot tubs. Prepare yourself as the South and Highlands hidden gems will leave you speechless while hiking through the mesmerizing mountain ranges of Kerlingarfjöll and Landmannalaugar. This adventure breaks with traditional trips to Iceland, offering you a small group trip with 10 people, an experienced guide, a 4×4 van, everyday activities and a unique route.
Our guide will welcome you and pick you up at Keflavik airport. With our 4×4 vehicle, we will head to our accommodation in the Keflavík area.
Our first full day of exploring Iceland! We start with a hike to the most recently erupted volcano in Iceland and the biggest eruption in the last 50 years - Fagradalsfjall. At the end of the day, we will head to our lodging in Laugarvatn, not before going through the complex of thermal baths that will help us to start the journey in a very relaxed way.
Today it is time to visit the famous Golden Circle, a set of 3 visits on the geology and history that make up one of the most visited places in Iceland. This visit is the best way to start contextualizing and understanding this country. Thingvellir, Geysir, and the Gullfoss waterfall will be our stops. After that, we will enter the highlands of Iceland. The interior is characterized by complete depopulation, with a large presence of glaciers, volcanoes and lava deserts. This combination makes it a unique place.
Todays' destination is the mountains of Kerlingarfjöll, ¨The old woman mountains¨. An active, geothermal area where besides enjoying our trekking, we will take a bath in the natural thermal waters. An unusual landscape: slopes with different orange and red colors, volcanic hot springs and rivulets and some permanent snow on the peaks. We leave the highlands to head south, to unique glamping, where we will have the pleasure to rest in spacious, private, and modern tents after this packed day.
Our fifth day of travel will tour the famous South, the area of Iceland with more famous landscapes, such as the Seljalandsfoss waterfall, Skógafoss, Reynisfjara (basalt beach) and the famous volcano, because of its eruption in 2010′, Eyjafjallajökull. Our group will not be left alone with the typical visits from the area, the day will reveal many other waterfalls and hidden gems that we will walk next to and observe while hiking near. At the end of the day, we will enter the heart of Þakgil, a magical place where we will hike the next day and spend the night.
First thing in the morning we will trek through the area where we have slept to discover one of the hidden gems of this place. We will then head to the largest glacier in Europe, for another trek on ice and, for those who dare, you can try abseiling under the control of our guide. We will end the day in Iceland’s most visited and famous canyon, formed by an ancient and feared volcano.
We return to the glacier again, but this time we switch from yesterday’s crampons and ice ax to the canoe. The main activity today is a kayak tour among the icebergs and under the ice caves. Afterward, we will take another trek to one of the most beautiful and not yet well-known canyons hidden between the tongues of the glaciers. For the last visit of the day, we cannot miss the unique lake Jökulsárlón, the glacier lagoon and the diamond beach formed by the constant movements of the glacier and the waves of the ocean.
If you were stunned by the interior of Iceland at the beginning of the trip… it’s time to come back! This time we’ll enter the most famous area of the highlands: Landmannalaugar. In this part prepare yourself for a little bit of everything: a 4×4 adventurous route through rivers and lava fields to reach a volcanic area. In our refuge today we have numerous trekkings to do and thermal waters to take a bath in unforgettable surroundings with beautiful mountainous landscapes.
Last day of an incredible adventure, but not the least spectacular. Leaving the highlands by another magnificent route in 4×4, we will visit the most stunning waterfall of the entire journey. Once in Reykjavík, we will make a tour around the city to visit Hallgrimskirkja church, Harpa concert&events hall, and Perlan and have the evening and night off to enjoy the city.
Time to say goodbye to Iceland! After breakfast, you will spend extra time in the capital or head directly to the airport of Keflavík. We hope to see you again soon :).
