We start the day continuing through the forest until the trail opens into high moorland. We may get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks - two of the three volcanic peaks that make up the summit of Kilimanjaro.
Todays trail goes onto the saddle of Kilimanjaro between the peaks of Kibo and Mawenzi. Wildlife and vegetation disappear as the hiking gets into the alpine zone and finally a trek ends at kibo huts. The places around are desert-like. At midnight of the same day the trek is expected to take its course to Uhuru peak.
Around midnight, trek starts to the summit and is expected to be the most mentally and physically challenging part. To ensure that we recovered from tiredness due to wind, steepness and cold in the darkness, the trek goes through frequent, but short, breaks. At Gilman’s point (5670m),the sunrise emerges from the east with magnificent rays of light coming over Mawenzi Peak. After a period time, the summit is reached, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro. After a comfortable couple of minutes on the plains of roof of Africa, we descend to Horombo Hut for the last overnight.
A last gentle walk of the trek through rainforest to Marangu Gate, giving farewell to the crew and transfer to hotel for overnight stay.
