The trail follows the slope of a mountain covered with beautiful pine trees and goes up to the pass, from where marvelous views overlook the 3 valleys of Tusheti.
You will descend the pass and go to Chigho, from where ride to the village Dartlo, which is on the tentative list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dartlo is also distinguished by the petroglyphs engraved on the walls of the houses and the ancient court, which dates back to the XVI century.

The journey begins in Tbilisi, heading toward the remote and breathtaking region of Tusheti, accessible only by a single mountain road. Traveling through the dramatic Stori Gorge, we ascend to the legendary Abano Pass at 2,960 meters above sea level, one of the highest drivable passes in Georgia. From there, the road descends into the stunning valleys of Tusheti, offering unforgettable mountain views along the way. Overnight stay in the village of Shenako.
The horseback riding route begins in Shenako, following narrow mountain trails through some of Tusheti’s most atmospheric and historically rich locations. We ride toward Old Diklo, located at the easternmost edge of Tusheti near the Dagestan border, where breathtaking panoramic views open in every direction. Along the route, riders pass through pine forests, flower-filled alpine meadows, and untouched mountain landscapes that highlight the wild beauty of Tusheti. The day follows a circular route, returning to Shenako by evening. Overnight stay in a family guesthouse.
From Shenako, we ride toward Omalo, continuing to the historic site known as “Ghele”, an important gathering place for the Tushetian people where major community decisions were once made. From Ghele, the trail leads to Dartlo Village, one of the most iconic and well-preserved settlements in Tusheti. Dartlo is renowned for its unique stone architecture, ancient petroglyphs carved into rocks, and an 18th-century traditional court system, historically represented by a judge and twelve jurors. After exploring Dartlo, the route continues toward the village of Chesho. Overnight stay in a family guesthouse.
On this day, the trail follows a riverbank path toward Parsma Village, then ascends to the Nakaicho Pass (3,000 m). From the pass, the route continues along the spectacular Makratela Ridge, known for its dramatic landscapes and breathtaking panoramic views over Tusheti’s valleys and mountain peaks. By the end of the day, we arrive in Omalo, where we visit the iconic Keselo Fortress Towers, one of Tusheti’s most recognizable landmarks. Overnight stay in a family guesthouse.
The tour concludes with a return drive to Tbilisi by vehicle. Along the way, we stop at the historic Alaverdi Monastery, one of Georgia’s most important religious and architectural monuments.
