Nyerere National Park – formally known as Selous Game Reserve
A newly established Park is part of what is known as Selous Game Reserve. Founded in 2019 and covering over 30,000 square kilometres, now the largest National Park in Africa. The park boasts Tanzania's largest elephant population and many lions, leopards, African hunting dogs, buffaloes, and hippos. Species commonly seen are bushbucks, red and blue duikers, elands, hartebeests, hyenas, giraffes, oryx, reedbucks, impalas, waterbucks and zebras.
The park has the most extensive range of safari activities, from Romantic Boat Safari along the Great Rufiji River, legendary fly camping trips, walking, and classic game driving in thriving wildlife areas.

Your adventure begins with a pick-up from your hotel or the airport in Dar es Salaam. Enjoy a scenic 5-hour drive south to Selous (Nyerere National Park), passing through charming rural villages and picturesque countryside, offering a glimpse into local life. Upon arrival, settle in and enjoy a leisurely lunch. At around 16:00, embark on a sunset boat safari along the majestic Rufiji River, the lifeblood of Selous. This river sustains a rich array of wildlife, and during the safari, you can expect to see hippos wallowing in the water, crocodiles basking on the riverbanks, and a variety of bird species, including the striking African fish eagle and vibrant kingfishers. The boat safari also provides a perfect opportunity to witness the spectacular sundown over the river, casting a golden glow on the tranquil waters. After the boat safari, return to the lodge for a delicious dinner and a restful overnight stay.
After a hearty breakfast, set off for an exhilarating full-day game drive in the park renowned for its rich biodiversity and varied landscapes; the park offers an unparalleled wildlife experience. Encounter majestic elephants moving through the bush, graceful giraffes browsing on treetops, lions resting in the shade, elusive leopards and shy antelopes like the sable and common eland. Journey to the shores of Lake Tagalala, a haven for various bird species, including the distinctive African skimmer with its red bill and the colourful white-fronted bee-eater. Enjoy a picnic lunch in a scenic spot, surrounded by the sounds and sights of nature. Continue your game drive in the afternoon, discovering the hidden wonders of the park and experiencing exciting wildlife encounters at every turn. In the evening, return to the lodge for rest, dinner, and an overnight stay.
Start your day with an early morning walking safari, a unique and educational experience that begins at 6:30 am after morning tea or coffee. Accompanied by an armed ranger, this 2-hour walk offers an intimate view of the miombo woodland environment. Guided bush walks provide a fascinating opportunity to get closer to the animals and learn about the intricacies of the African bush. Discover the smaller details of the ecosystem, such as animal tracks, insects, and plants, often overlooked during game drives. Walking along the trails through the African bush offers a different perspective and allows for a more personal connection with nature. After the walking safari, enjoy a hearty breakfast. Pack your bags and depart for Dar es Salaam, with a drop-off at your hotel or the airport.
