Climb from Marrakech into the High Atlas via the Tizi n’Tichka mountain pass, following a spectacular road of hairpin bends and ever-changing scenery. We make photo stops at panoramic viewpoints to capture terraced fields, snow-dusted peaks in season and traditional Amazigh (Berber) villages built in earth and stone. Your driver shares insights into mountain life, local crafts and seasonal farming as we cross the ridge that links Marrakech with Ouarzazate. It’s the perfect introduction to southern Morocco: clean air, wide horizons and dramatic geology. Short breaks for coffee or restrooms keep the journey comfortable.
Guided walk through the UNESCO-listed ksar of Aït Ben Haddou, a masterpiece of southern Moroccan earthen architecture. Cross the riverbed and wander lanes flanked by kasbahs, granaries and defensive towers that once guarded caravans on the old trans-Saharan trade route. Learn how mud brick, timber and palm fronds keep homes cool in summer and warm in winter, and why families still maintain houses inside the fortifications. If you climb to the hilltop granary, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of the Ounila Valley and Atlas foothills. The ksar has also served as a backdrop for many international films and series.
Short stop in Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, for an exterior visit of the 19th-century Kasbah Taourirt. Admire its crenellated towers and honey-colored walls, then take in views of the town framed by palmeries and mountains. Your guide explains how Ouarzazate prospered at the crossroads of trading routes and later became home to Morocco’s film industry. Time permitting, we view the kasbah courtyard and hear stories of the Glaoui pashas who once ruled the region. It’s an ideal leg-stretch and photo opportunity before continuing along the famed Road of a Thousand Kasbahs toward the Dades Valley.
Drive the celebrated “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs” skirting the Skoura palm oasis, where a lattice of canals irrigates wheat fields, orchards and olive groves beneath waving palms. Stop for photos among mud-brick fortresses that once protected caravans and villages; iconic kasbahs such as Amridil are often visible from the road. Your guide highlights the ingenuity of traditional water systems and the role oases play in Saharan life. This gentle, green corridor is a beautiful transition from the high mountains to desert plateaus, with warm late-afternoon light that’s perfect for photography.
Walk along the palm-lined river and the towering Todgha canyons, where cliffs rise up to 300 m. Enjoy time for photos, a short stroll through the oasis irrigation channels and local craft stalls. Learn about oasis farming and Berber life before continuing east toward the Sahara.
Short stop in Erfoud, famous for dates and fossil workshops. Refreshment/toilet break, chance to sample local dates (seasonal) and see how fossils are carved and polished. Continue to Merzouga on desert roads.
Arrive in Merzouga to meet your camel team. Store main luggage safely, pack an overnight bag for the camp. Guide briefing on the route, safety and sandboarding options.
Mount your camel and ride across the golden dunes of Erg Chebbi as the sun sets over the Sahara. Photo stops on the highest ridges; optional sandboarding at the camp. After dinner, enjoy Berber music by the fire under a star-filled sky. Private tent/luxury upgrade available.
Wake early to watch the sunrise over the Erg Chebbi dunes, then enjoy breakfast at the desert camp. After breakfast, return by camel or 4×4 shuttle to Merzouga to meet the driver and begin the journey back.
Stop in Tinghir/Todgha for a short walk or photo break along the palm-lined river and canyon walls before continuing west.
Scenic drive through the Dades Valley with a viewpoint over the switchback road and “monkey fingers” formations; restroom/coffee stop.
Quick break in Ouarzazate, the gateway to the desert, before tackling the High Atlas road back to Marrakech.
