An 8-meter-tall (26-foot) statue of the reclining Buddha attaining nirvana. The statue is cut into a massive natural sandstone boulder, which has been enhanced with a modern staircase and a shelter for the Buddha. It is a highly sacred and significant spot for all Cambodians, and there are always patrons visiting it, which can get pretty busy at times. There are numerous souvenir stalls on the streets surrounding the pagoda, and before the stairs there is a huge naga balustrade and an entrance arch flanked by elephants (all contemporary). When you arrive at the pagoda's entryway, you can remove your shoes, say your blessings, and go up the stairway to the big Buddha.
Around 800 AD, a thousand Lingas were carved into the river bedrock. A calm river walk displays Lingas of all sizes. The site is made up of a succession of stone rock relief carvings in sandstone formations along the river bed and banks. It is also known as the "Valley of a 1000 Lingas" or "The River of a Thousand Lingas." The motifs for stone carvings are primarily lingams (phallic symbols of Hindu god Shiva) represented as neatly organised bumps on the surface of a sandstone bed rock, as well as lingam-yoni designs.
