The Maliau Basin, aka "Borneo's Lost World," is a massive, ancient crater where nature has been penning its epic tale for millions of years. This 3 day, 2 night invite you to plunges into a wild wonderland! This is one of the final frontiers of untamed nature on the world, basically a secret until 1988, when a scientific expedition finally spilt the beans on this hidden gem. Who knew that over 50% of the basin is still playing hide and seek? It might just be the secret lair of some long-lost species! Reaching it requires 4x4 vehicles stay and meal inclusive.
In the Maliau Basin there are trees so tall they throw shade like a pro, wildlife flying around like it’s a game of tag, overgrown carnivorous pitcher plants ready to impress, and an ethereal moss that makes you feel like you’ve stepped into a fairy tale. The expedition commences with an early morning departure from Tawau Airport, tawau city or Semporna town directly, followed by a drive of around 5-6 hours that establishes the tone for the forthcoming experience, depending on your flight arrival time, hence arrival might slightly adjust itinerary or subject to the traffic, etc. The environment changes from a patchwork of rural communities to a thick forest as you leave cities behind. The final stretch to Maliau Basin is a bumpy ride on gravel roads, perfect for those trusty 4WDs that can tackle the wild side of nature!
After arriving at the Shell Maliau Basin Reception and Information Building (SMRIB), be greeted and given a briefing about the conservation area's regulations and significance. continue for approximately one hour to the Maliau Basin Study Centre (MBSC), which is the primary research and accommodation center.
Experience the Nature Gallery and immerse yourself in the exquisite diversity of Borneo's Enchanted Lost World, Dining experience in the grand hall. Then hop in the 4WD and zoom off on the fabulous Maliau Safari Night, glide into the enchanting shadows of the forgotten realm and catch a glimpse of the exquisite, nocturnal creatures, if the weather permit only. overnight in Maliau Basin. (An alternative to the night drive in the case that it is not possible due to bad rainy weather) then just kick things off at 5 am with the Maliau Basin Sunrise Drive, cruising until you hit Sungai Gajah, and witness sunrise at the Maliau Basin Observation Tower. From a distance, at a height of 61 feet, See a panoramic as a piece of the imImbak Canyon, also known as Gunung Kuli. an invitation to catch the sun making its grand entrance over the jungle, revealing a stunning spectacle just for you.
Morning munchies at the grand hall! After depart to the Maliau Rim Observation Tower (3 to 5 minutes drive) to see the higher part of the Lost World of Borneo. Keep cruising to the Agathis Camp, just a breezy 20 to 30-minute drive from the Maliau Rim observation Tower. Once arrive, take a delightful 1KM self-guided stroll along the nearby trail for a peek into the forest and its hidden wildlife wonders, all tucked away in the hill mixed dipterocarp forest at the southernmost tip of the Maliau Basin Conservation Area. Back to the Studies Centre for lunch and rest.
Evening head over to Belian Camping Ground for an evening stroll on the Canopy walkway, aka the Maliau Sky Bridge—it's a heart-pounding 100 meters up in the skies! If fortune smiles upon you, you might just catch a glimpse of some vibrant, one-of-a-kind birds from the lost world. Continue on trekking at the Educational Nature Trail for an hour until you reach the Centre! Right by the Maliau’s river, which sports a charming tea hue thanks to some dissolved tannins and a splash of colour from the local greenery then return.
Dining experience in the grand hall, then keep the adventure going with a night walk or a drive down the nature trail to spot those elusive nighttime critters for about an hour! As the spotlights cut through the darkness, catch a glimpse of some of opportunity for nocturnal wildlife, like civet cats, leopard cats, owls, etc. overnight in Maliau Basin.
Wake up for morning bird watching at the nature trail-self guided or own leisure time. Another breakfast bites in the grand hall. Return back to tawau airport or semporna with a lost world journey of a lifetime
