This 2D1N journey to Kinabatangan is a chance to experience the oldest rainforest on Earth up close, perfect for those who are short on time or prefer a brief visit. A sanctuary for Borneo’s iconic Big Five: proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, orangutans, crocodiles, and hornbills. Here find a vibrant, beating heart that embraces its wild spirit—a celebration of the beauty and resilience of nature where hornbills dance in the shadows of crimson sunsets and pygmy elephants call out at dusk.
Get ready to set off on an adventure where lush rainforests greet you alongside meandering chocolate-brown rivers, and amazing wildlife experiences await at every turn. The Kinabatangan River in Malaysian Borneo is more than just a place to visit; it’s a vibrant, living showcase of nature, providing one of Asia’s richest wildlife experiences, just like those who were seen in David Attenborough’s documentaries.
You will be picked up in the middle of the day from Sandakan or Sepilok and taken on a 2.5-hour drive through rural towns and emerald oil palm fields, leaving behind the hustle and bustle of city life.
The first wildlife meeting took place at a lodge on stilts that was built over a river. You will be able to get to your dorm or deluxe room after a safety instruction. At 4:00 PM, the jungle's "golden hour" starts. Get on a covered boat with an electric motor that hums softly so you don't scare animals. Expert guides lead the first wildlife tour on a two-hour boat ride along the Kinabatangan River. The riverbanks are bustling with activity as the sun sets. Long-tailed macaques and proboscis monkeys are happily foraging along the shores, while saltwater crocodiles are lounging in the muddy water. If you're lucky, you could spot orangutans in the trees or even catch a glimpse of the elusive Borneo pygmy elephant, which many tourists find to be a real highlight! Bird enthusiasts will have a great time spotting hornbills, kingfishers, and eagles.
Return back at the resort and enjoy the dinner, drift asleep to the rhythmic chorus of frogs and cicadas, your AC murmuring against the humid night together with the sound of the wild forest. A hearty dinner featuring local and international cuisine is served at the lodge’s restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxed, with the symphony of the jungle providing a natural soundtrack. Share stories with fellow travelers while enjoying free-flowing coffee and tea before head to bed.
Rise and shine before the sun to enjoy the delightful sounds of gibbons and hornbills on a lovely sunrise river cruise. The lovely morning air and gentle light make it a perfect time for watching wildlife: primates are lively, birds are soaring, and the misty river scenery brings a feeling of peacefulness from long ago. This cruise often offers delightful sightings which you might miss in the afternoon, like playful otters or early-rising reptiles.
Head back to the lodge for a delicious breakfast buffet, and then we'll take care of the check-out procedures. Take this opportunity to relax, pack up, and maybe savor one last moment on your balcony with a lovely view of the river.
The journey back to Sandakan is starting, with drop-offs at airports, hotels, or the Sepilok areas. It's a great idea to book flights that leave after 2:00 PM, as this helps you avoid any rushed transfers!
