The Mouraria neighborhood is one of the most traditional neighborhoods of Lisbon. It was in this area that the Moors went to live after the conquest of Lisbon by D. Afonso Henriques in 1147 until they were expelled in the 15th century. There are few vestiges left from that time. However, Mouraria is still today the most multicultural neighborhood in the city. In all, 56 nationalities live together in this neighborhood, most of them from Bangladesh, China, India, Pakistan and Mozambique.
The Elevador da Bica, officially called Ascensor da Bica, is one of the most emblematic elevators in Lisbon, Portugal. Opened in 1892, it connects Rua de São Paulo to Largo do Calhariz, up the steep and picturesque Rua da Bica de Duarte Belo.
